The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is an analog system relying on underground copper wires for communication. However, this outdated hardware can no longer meet current demands and is being gradually replaced by cloud-based systems.
We are transitioning to a fully digital phone network powered by IP (Internet Protocol) technology. This process has already begun, with plans to complete the transition before Openreach retires PSTN and ISDN services in 2027. By that time, every phone line in the UK will operate digitally, routing calls over IP instead of PSTN. Any services not migrated to the new network will cease to function.
In addition to PSTN, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) lines are also being retired. Introduced in 1986 as an improvement over analog landlines, ISDN offered features that were unavailable with traditional systems. However, it too is now obsolete and unable to compete with modern IP technology.
